{"id":12637,"date":"2026-08-14T07:00:42","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T11:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stgenevieve-stmaurice.org\/parish\/?p=12637"},"modified":"2026-08-14T08:53:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T12:53:45","slug":"20th-sunday-in-orinary-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stgenevieve-stmaurice.org\/parish\/2026\/08\/14\/20th-sunday-in-orinary-time\/","title":{"rendered":"20th Sunday in Ordinary Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>GROW AS A DISCIPLE <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have often wondered why Jesus\u2019 words to the Gentile woman in today\u2019s Gospel sound so harsh. The woman was simply asking Jesus to heal her daughter, as so many others before her had done. Jesus\u2019 reply that he had been sent only to the \u201clost sheep of the house of Israel\u201d may have been true under the old covenant. But with his coming, Jesus initiated the new covenant where all are invited, all are welcome. Through the woman\u2019s gift of faith (whose prayer says simply, \u201cLord, help me\u201d), she brings herself and her daughter into the joy and goodness of the kingdom. Jesus commends her faith (and her persistence) and heals her daughter. This passage demonstrates the healing God wishes to provide for all of his people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GO EVANGELIZE <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thus says the Lord in Isaiah: \u201cMy house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.\u201d Responsorial psalm: \u201cO God, let all the nations praise you!\u201d Jesus to the Canaanite (Gentile) woman: \u201cO woman, great is your faith!\u201d Our readings today spell out loud and clear that our God\u2019s love and forgiveness is meant for all. Not just the few. This is good news, indeed. What does God ask of us in return? He asks that we strive to do what is right \u2026 what is just. In short, we must join [our]selves to the Lord, as Isaiah says, and God will welcome us into his holy kingdom. How do we do that? We can start by trying to imitate the generosity of God\u2019s grace and welcome those who seek God\u2019s mercy and healing. In other words, we reach out in love to each other and seek to build up the unity of his Church, the Body of Christ.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WELCOME<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On some level, all the readings today speak of disparate people coming to the faith: foreigners, all the nations, the Gentiles, a Canaanite woman. Does your parish have some form of welcoming ministry \u2013 a welcome desk, ushers, greeters? The power of a friendly smile, a warm handshake, a disposition of \u201cwe\u2019re happy you\u2019re here\u201d cannot be underestimated for visitors to our churches.
