Welcome to the 3<\/span>rd<\/span>Sunday of Ordinary Time. <\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s Gospel presents Jesus\u2019 \u201cinaugural address\u201d in the synagogue of Nazareth <\/span>and outlines his theology of total liberation, which marks a great moment in Jesus\u2019 <\/span>ministry. The Scripture readings for today focus our attention to the importance and <\/span>liberating power of the Word of God as \u201csacramental,\u201d making God present in our midst. <\/span>The readings challenge us to listen to the Word, accept it into our hearts, then put it into <\/span>practice as we live out our lives, thus liberating ourselves and others from all types of <\/span>bondages.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this passage Luke describes, how on the Sabbath, Jesus stood before the people in <\/span>the synagogue of his hometown of Nazareth, reading and interpreting what Isaiah had <\/span>prophesied about the Messiah and his mission. Jesus claims that he is the One sent \u201c<\/span>to <\/span>bring glad tidings to the poor, liberation to captives, recovery of sight to the blind and <\/span>freedom for the oppressed.\u201d <\/span>To the great amazement and disbelief of his own townsmen, <\/span>Jesus declares that Isaiah\u2019s prophecy is being fulfilled at that very moment \u201cin your <\/span>hearing,\u201d because the prophecy foretold and described Jesus\u2019 own mission and ministry. <\/span>Jesus\u2019 mission is still to give liberation to everyone who will listen to his \u201cGood News,\u201d <\/span>accepts it and put it into practice. Luke reports that surprise and admiration were the <\/span>initial reactions of the people, who were astonished at the power and eloquence of this <\/span>son of their soil. <\/span><\/p>\n

How does today\u2019s liturgy of the word affect us?<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. We need to receive Christ\u2019s freedom, live it and pass it on to others: As members <\/span>of Christ\u2019s Mystical Body, we share in the freeing, saving mission of Jesus, but still, we are <\/span>captives of sin. We need Christ to set us free. We are often blinded by our evil habits, <\/span>addictions and need for financial security. Once we receive true liberation from Christ, we <\/span>have to share it with those we encounter in our daily lives: families, neighborhoods, <\/span>parishes and workplaces.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. We need to let the power of the Holy Spirit fill us and then be ready to have <\/span>miracles done through us. Today\u2019s Gospel tells us that Jesus performed miracles because <\/span>he was filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us be ready to become Spirit<\/span>–<\/span>filled <\/span>instruments of Christ\u2019s saving freedom. Let us be free in Christ! <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
