[su_quote] On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, Jesus showed himself to his apostles. He breathed on them, and said to them: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Children are eligible for the sacrament of Confession when they are in the second grade providing they have a baptismal certificate on file in the Faith Formation office and are receiving instruction through St. Genevieve Elementary School, St. Genevieve-St. Maurice Parish Faith Formation or are being instructed at home with the guidance of the Faith Formation office. First Confession is usually in February.
Parents remain the primary catechists of their children and are expected to participate in the sacramental preparation by reinforcing the catechism, attending required meetings and practices, and being committed to their child’s regular attendance at weekly Mass and catechism class.
The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (also known as Confession)
[su_quote] It is called the sacrament of conversion because it makes sacramentally present Jesus’ call to conversion, the first step in returning to the Father from whom one has strayed by sin.
It is called the sacrament of Penance, since it consecrates the Christian sinner’s personal and ecclesial step of conversion, penance, and satisfaction.[/su_quote] CCC1423
[su_quote] It is called the sacrament of confession, since the disclosure or confession of sins to a priest is an essential element of this sacrament. In a profound sense it is also a ‘confession’ – acknowledgement and praise – of the holiness of God and of his mercy toward a sinful man.[/su_quote] CCC1424
[su_quote] It is called the sacrament of forgiveness, since by the priest’s sacramental absolution God grants the penitent pardon and peace.[/su_quote] CCC1449
[su_quote] It is called the sacrament of Reconciliation, because it imparts to the sinner the love of God who reconciles: ‘Be reconciled to God.’ He who lives by God’s merciful love is ready to respond to the Lords call: ‘Go; first be reconciled to your brothers.’ [/su_quote] CCC1442
