Preparing for this Sunday’s gospel, our students discussed the several sayings of Jesus that have vivid word pictures. The blind cannot lead the blind without falling in a ditch. We shouldn’t focus on the splinter in our brother’s eye when we have log in our own. A good tree produces good fruit. They are easy to remember and reflect common sense. They offer practical help in living as Jesus’ followers. Jesus challenges us to include all people in the family of God, respect people we don’t like, and make conflicts better instead of worse. We show that we love Jesus when we keep his Law of Love and the Ten Commandments. We share the goodness in our hearts with our family, friends, and people of our parish.
“According to the Lord’s words-“thus you will know them by their fruits’-reflection on God’s blessings in our life and in the lives of the saints offer us a guarantee that grace is at work in us and spurs us on to an ever-greater faith and an attitude of trustful poverty” (CCC, 2005, citing Matthew 7:20).
