This week your children learned that in Sunday’s Gospel Jesus tells a parable about a man whose fig tree never produces any fruit. The man wants to cut it down, but his gardener suggests giving the tree one more chance. This Gospel parable reminds us how often each of us needs another chance.
God is like the gardener in the parable about the fig tree. He is always willing to give us another chance to grow and change. He wants us to make loving choices and to follow Jesus.
When we make unloving choices, we hurt our relationship with God and others. We ask God to forgive our sins in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. “Conversion is first of all a work of the grace of God who makes our hearts return to Him…God gives us the strength to begin anew” (CCC, 1432).
Parents, discuss second chances with your child how God gives us second chances and how family members and friends need to give one another second chances. Invite your child to tell you the difference between a mistake and a sin.
